I have a very steep driveway. It gets so icy I can barely brake at the bottom so I dont go flying into the road....I would avoid it if you can...
You should also keep buckets of a sand/salt mitxure about every 100 feet and treat it during and after the storms.
Stay away. Even though ice or snow happens a few times a year...it is just such a hassle to get in or out of the car, walk up after getting mail from a long day or cleaning the cars.
I grew up in a house on a hill, when all we had was rear wheel drive cars, then the winter made that driveway a royal pain in the a. How steep is it???? Ive seen some that are crazy, they look like water flume rides with turns in them to slow the decline. I wouldnt want to flip my car over in my own driveway.
But how steep is steep?
So true. Our driveway slopes, and receives little sun on much of it. Meanwhile, the neighbors driveway never has snow or ice, it melts very quickly as it gets full sun. During an icy winter, we cant even get out of our driveway without using 4WD. And weve had visitors get stuck, too. I couldnt believe after one snow storm, my kids ordered pizza, and the delivery man came in a Honda sedan. He got stuck, and my dh had to push him out of the driveway with his truck. Then the delivery man got stuck on our street, as the street goes uphill as well. So my dh had to push him for a few blocks. It can be very difficult to drive up hill/down hill when its icy. I would avoid a steep driveway, unless it ced directly south.
A lot of it depends . We have had a few long, and sometimes steep, driveways and approach roads. All wheel drive, snow tires, common sense, weather planning, careful driving, coupled with plowing and in the extreme, salt or cinders will endure anything we have had here in last 30 years. This doesnt mean we run out the door in the worst conditions, but others with less challenging drives probably shouldnt either. Prudence and planning are required.
Also note if the driveway ces south. It needs to get sun light to help keep it from getting icey.

We then worked our way up, upon his return...with salt and sand. Forevermore we dont go without a garage with salt and sand stored there........It is too risky not to have that stored.
If you are worried about plowing there are cheap plow trucks on craigslist in CT. Some can be had for under $3000.
Also note if the driveway ces south. It needs to get sun light to help keep it from getting icey. It is amazing but my driveway ces north and can be icey in the winter while the homes across the street ce south and will be dry. Jay
Any thoughts on how big of a pain this would be in the winter? Its "shared" but the others arent building anytime soon.I would stay away from a house that has a steep driveway...Steep driveways (houses, live, dangerouswhat a pain that will be when we get snow or even worse, freezing rain (ie. ice). And, if there is any water draining or running down it, it will freeze and you will have a very dangerous situation.
Me too......Hubby drove the SUV down the driveway after being stuck up top in the ice for three days.
How steep? I grew up in a house that had an up-hill driveway that was about that length. We were fine getting up it after it was plowed and using snow tires and/or 4wd. It also helped that it was a gravel driveway so there was something to bite into under the snow.
We have enjoyed the quiet and private houses at the end of these drives. We must have, as we are on the third such house. We relish the setting and consider it a big plus. When the weather is SO bad, we stay home and off the roads. If there is a true emergency there are ways to deal with them as well. As I said...it depends.
The wheels never turned......It was like a sled all the way down! TG it stopped by hitting a low berm and slowed to the bottom. Our plow, on the tractor, did not work in the ice ~ just useless.

not to mention the resale value. People want flat land...at least the driveways.
